TMJ and Headaches

The Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) is the jaw joint. People with Temporo-Mandibular (TMJ) dysfunction can have jaw, ear and tooth pain due to stress, chronic clenching, lifestyle, trauma, extensive dental work or having a hypermobility condition like Ehler’s-Danlos.

When you have pain in your jaw, teeth and head it can greatly impact your stress and mood. It can feel isolating to experience fatigue with talking and not be able to eat and socialize the way that you want.

Often associated with TMJ dysfunction are headaches which can interfere with concentration and greatly disturb your quality of life

How Can We Help

  • Soft tissue massage, joint mobilization and manual therapy can be helpful to address tender points reproducing head and neck pain.

  • Postural exercises are helpful to optimize TMJ alignment and minimize strain on the ligaments and disc.

  • Joint mobilizations of the TMJ joint can reduce joint noises, improve mouth opening and reduce frequency of jaw locking.

  • Joint stabilization exercises and Robocado exercises are useful in providing more stability in the joint and minimizing progression of pain and dysfunction.

  • Myofunctional assessment and treatment of tongue restrictions, tongue strength and tongue range of motion is imperative to fully diagnose and treat the cause of TMJ disorders.
